Utah State University's division of Health Professions offers certificate programs including nursing assistant (NA), emergency medical technician (EMT), medical assistant (MA), medical laboratory technician (MLT), pharmacy technician, and phlebotomy. NAs often work in a wide variety of settings; nursing homes, hospitals, adult day care centers, personal homes and assisted living facilities all require nursing assistants to act as a helpful liaison between the RN or LPN and the patient.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Emergency Medical Technicians provide out of hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system.

Medical Assistants primarily practice in ambulatory care settings such as medical offices, and clinics. Medical assistants are a crucial component to a medical practice’s staff.

What health professions programs does USU offer?

Our certificates include: Phlebotomy CP, Nursing Assistant CP, Medical Assistant CC, Pharmacy Technician CC, Emergency Medical Technician, and Surgical Technology AAS.

Where are these programs offered?

Programs are offered at Price, Moab, and Blanding campuses. The Emergency Medical Technician program is only available at the Price campus. Some programs in Moab require students to commute to the Blanding campus to complete labs.

How do I know which courses I need to take as prerequisites for the program I want?

You can find information about each program on our website. Select the program you are interested in, then select “Degree Finder” and choose the option under “Program Requirements”. For more information regarding the classes you need to take, please reach out to your advisor.

Can I get clinical experience or internships in my program?

USU requires students to complete externship hours and clinical experience opportunities as part of our programs for competitive professional placement.

How long does it take to complete these programs?

Our Certificate of Proficiency programs are one semester long (August – December or January – April). Our Certificates of Completion are two semesters long after admission, plus one to two semesters for prerequisites. Our Surgical Technology AAS takes two years to complete, plus one to two semesters of prerequisite work.

Are your programs online?

While many classes can be joined through broadcast or Zoom, students must attend in person for labs. At this point, we do not have any completely online programs.

What things on a background/background check would prevent me from entering the program?

As a general rule, felonies, violent, sexual, and drug-related offenses, as well as theft and fraud. However, applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Is there an application process for the Health Professions programs?

Yes, all of our programs have an application process, except for the Phlebotomy CP. In general, all the programs that have an application process require a drug screen, background check, immunization records and a two-step TB test. We have specific providers for the drug screen and background check and some programs might have other requirements, so make sure you reach out to an advisor before starting your application process. We also have a GPA requirement of 3.0 for Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Tech and Surgical Technology to be admitted.
