Associate Professor Matt Yost, in the Department of Plants, Soils, and Climate and who serves at interim associate dean for research in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, has been named the 2025 CAAS Researcher of the Year for his exceptional contributions to agricultural science.
Yost, who grew up on a dairy farm in southern Idaho, brings his lifelong passion for agriculture to his work. In the past three years alone, he has published 28 journal articles, 29 Extension articles, 6 trade journal articles, and 75 abstracts. He has led and collaborated on projects that received over $6.6 million in grants and contracts while actively presenting his research at public, academic, and industry forums.
Professor Paul Johnson, head of the Department of Plants, Soils, and Climate, said “Dr. Yost has been the most productive and impactful researcher in our department.”
Yost’s research focuses on irrigation, water conservation, precision agriculture, soil health, and adaptive nutrient management, with a goal of bridging the gap between scientific research and practical applications for growers.
Yost also leads USU Crops, a team of 25 Extension faculty who work together to educate and assist thousands of stakeholders each year. He is a dedicated mentor, with his graduate students contributing to 63 peer-reviewed journal articles, 50 Extension articles, and over 250 abstracts.
Yost’s work is transforming agriculture, driving innovation, and creating lasting benefits for farmers, the agricultural community, and everyone who relies on a sustainable food system.
