Biography

My educational background and work experience relate to agricultural communication. I prepare students to communicate about agricultural and environmental issues using print, broadcast and digital media to different audiences.

Teaching Interests

I teach undergraduates in agricultural communication, specifically graphic design, website design, and internship supervision. In the graduate program, I teach research and academic writing, qualitative research methods, mixed methods research, and communication tools in Extension.

Research Interests

My research projects design and test models for increasing engagement and social capital in local communities through the local food movement (farmers’ markets, community supported agriculture, farm to school, direct-to-retail businesses). I also develop and assess various learning interventions and delivery technologies that increase higher-order thinking. My research strengths are program evaluation, survey methodology, and specific qualitative research designs (focus groups, interviews, content analysis).

Graduate Mentoring Philosophy
My philosophy of graduate mentoring is grounded in a two-way dynamic relationship. I consider myself to be a facilitator who focuses on setting up clear expectations, educational traineeship, creation of opportunities, and mutual respect.
Setting Up Clear Expectations: I explain how they would be considered colleagues who would work alongside me and contribute ideas and their point-of-view on our projects. I use our initial meeting to ensure we would work well together, discussing their background, work style, research interests, writing ability, funding opportunities, and career goals. This information helps us select appropriate research projects, create opportunities, and discuss the desired amount of mentoring needed.
Educational Traineeship: Ways I guide their independent learning are by 1) introducing them to resources that can help them thrive on their own or when I’m not around, 2) assisting in the development of research questions/objectives that address research problems and form their work, 3) demonstrating how to use the software programs prior to their data analysis, and 4) providing feedback on their manuscripts.
Creation of Opportunities: I encourage my mentees to develop their own research ideas. We will co-author journal articles. I coach my mentees so that they communicate about their research through poster and oral presentations at conferences as well as have casual conversations with colleagues. These experiences enable me to introduce them to colleagues.
Mutual Respect: While I have more professional experience in academia than my mentees, it is important we have mutual respect. This mutual respect helps build a relationship and enables them to seek support when navigating tough times.
