Biography
I was born in Willmar, Minnesota in 1952 into a family with two older brothers. My oldest brother taught landscape architecture at USU for 42 years. I received my undergraduate degree in LAEP in 1976 from USU. I attended Harvard University in 1980 and received my masters degree in 1982. I have practiced professionally in landscape architecture since 1976 and been a partner in two successful design practices with national/international reputations. I have two grown children Natalie and Sam.
Teaching Interests
My teaching interests are in the studio practice of design for landscape architecture urban design and planning. The culture and practice of "studio learning" interests me. This practice involves heuristic teaching methods with students embracing self-initiated inquiry, personal and group discovery, sharing and communication of ideas. My interests and teaching experience lies in the areas of design theory, history and its application to design, communication and its application to design and sustainability as an integral part of the design process. I am particularly interested in raising the capability levels of our graduating students to find the best employment opportunities available. Critical thinking and personal skills such as poise are the results of this effort to promote collaborative heuristic learning.
Research Interests
I am interested in design teaching methods specifically tailored to a creative studio environment that encourages accelerated learning and critical thinking. Entrepreneurship originates in business practices, when blended with design process methods this pairing creates powerful design outcomes. Teaching this awareness how these methods can be employed in Studio Culture is of great interest.
