Biography
Brian Warnick was raised in Wyoming and received bachelor's degrees in Secondary Education-Biology and Special Education and a master's degree in Agricultural Systems Technology, all from USU. He taught high school agriculture and biology in Box Elder School District for seven years before accepting a faculty position at Oregon State University where he earned a Ph.D. He has been a professor of agricultural education at Utah State University since 2004. From 2014-2022, he served as associate dean for academic programs in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences and now heads the Department of Technology, Design, and Technical Education. He and his wife, Tami, live in Providence and have three children.
Teaching Interests
The primary focus of my teaching is to prepare secondary agricultural education teachers and other professionals who provide community-based agricultural education through extension, communication, and agricultural literacy programs. Providing students with solid, content-specific pedagogical skills and knowledge is at the forefront of my teaching agenda.
Research Interests
My research interests include assessing the professional and continuing education needs of agricultural educators, assessing models for the effective delivery of teacher professional development programs, assessing career decision making, and assessing university student recruitment and retention.
Graduate Student Advising Statement
While my current ability to serve as a primary advisor or committee chair for graduate students is limited, I do welcome opportunities to serve as a member of graduate committees. I view my role in graduate advising as a facilitator of student success, serving as a coach or guide as the graduate student develops confidence and independence. I will treat graduate students with whom I work with a high level of respect and view them as lifelong colleagues. I will commit to being approachable, kind, encouraging, and helpful. At the same time, I expect the graduate students with whom I work to be open to feedback and input, work toward becoming independent scholars, maintain appropriate timelines for completion of degree requirements, maintain high level of ethical behavior, and communicate concerns and issues quickly. My primary objective is to support graduate students in reaching their educational and career goals.
