Speaker Bio:

Pierre Lavoie is a Canadian lighting designer specializing in dance.

With a background as a stage manager for various dance companies, Pierre immersed himself in the world of movement and rhythm. He combines a deep understanding of the art of dance with his technical expertise, allowing him to create lighting designs that seamlessly complement and accentuate the vision of choreographers and directors, much like a client in landscape architecture.

Pierre's expertise extends beyond traditional stage performances. He has lent his creative vision to museum and site-specific productions, skillfully integrating lighting into unconventional spaces. This versatility and ability to adapt his craft to different environments showcase his creativity and adaptability.

Pierre Lavoie's work has received critical acclaim, with The Globe & Mail recognizing him as “one of Canada's greatest lighting masters”, and The New York Times describing his work as “superbly lighted”.

Among the highlights of Pierre's career are his collaborations with the Alberta Ballet on seven full-length rock ballets. The series began with Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and the Drum in 2007 and continued until the last chapter with PHI in 2022, featuring the music of David Bowie. These collaborations demonstrate Pierre's ability to merge different artistic disciplines and create visually stunning productions that captivate audiences.
