The Utah State University School of Veterinary Medicine, in conjunction with the Cache Veterinary Practitioners Association (CVPA) and the Utah Veterinary Medical Association (UVMA), is hosting a continuing education event, Applicable Equine Dentistry with Nick Moore, DVM. The workshop is Saturday, Sept. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the USU Equine Center, 3580 S. US Hwy-89 in Wellsville.

Nick Moore, past president of the International Association of Equine Dentistry, will present the workshop that is open to vet practitioners from across the state and the surrounding region.

Moore began his training in equine dentistry at the Academy of Equine Dentistry. His passion and experience in the industry led him to attend veterinary school at Colorado State University. After graduation, Moore received advanced training in equine dentistry by completing an internship at the Arizona Equine Medical and Surgical Centre.

Moore has shared his knowledge and experience in equine dentistry with practitioners in South America, Australia, Europe and all over the USA. He regularly travels across the country to perform standing oral extractions and minimally invasive oral surgeries for referring veterinary practices. Moore founded his own practice, Moore Equine Dental Services, in Georgetown, Texas, and has published several peer-reviewed papers on various aspects of equine dentistry.

Karl Hoopes, assistant professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine and USU Extension equine specialist, said this is an opportunity veterinarians should not miss.

“There is a significant lack of knowledge in this area,” Hoopes said. “In vet school you probably only get 8 hours of hands-on training in equine dentistry before you are sent out into the real world. All the information presented in this workshop will be very valuable for the equine industry as a whole.”

Registration fees are $100 for UVMA and CVPA members attending both the lecture and wet lab and $150 for non-members. Registration for the lecture alone is $50 for members and $75 for non-members. Graduates from the USU School of Veterinary Medicine can attend the lecture portion free and the wet lab for $50.

Seven continuing education credits are available to veterinarians through the Utah Veterinary Medical Association for attending both the lecture and the wet lab. Three credits are available for attending the lecture only.
