"Patty" was started in the Utah State University Equine Program. In this program each horse is taught basic ground work skills such as tying, grooming, leading, picking up feet, lunging, and working in a round pen. They are taught to load/unload in a trailer, and stand for the farrier and vet. They are also trained to be bathed, clipped, and blanketed. Under saddle, the colts are taught basic body control at the walk, jog, and lope. Throughout the semester the colts are introduced to a variety of environments such as indoor/outdoor riding arenas, being ridden over logs and bridges and crossing water.

Patty has approximately 45 days under saddle. She is very athletic and could excel in a variety of disciplines. Patty is a HERDA carrier and also a GBED carrier. Full disease panel test results can be found on the back of her registration papers.

As a weanling Patty had a very focal traumatic injury to the dorsal aspect of her right hind cannon region. There was a skin wound with firm swelling and pain on palpation. Radiographs taken on 6/22/18 indicated that she had a sequestrum in the bone just under the surface of the wound. A sequestrum occurs when a bone gets bruised and/or there is a microfracture that disrupts the blood supply to that region of the bone. Treatment for a sequestrum is surgical debridement and prognosis for recovery is excellent in the absence of post-surgical complications. Patty underwent surgery on 7/5/18 to remove the sequestrum. The procedure and recovery were uneventful and successful. Several repeat radiographic studies were subsequently performed to monitor her healing progress. We are reporting this history on Patty to explain the lump that is visible on her right hind leg at the previous injury/surgery site. These tissues are healed and the remaining evidence is a permanent ‘blemish’. A ‘blemish’ is a visual abnormality that does not limit the horses’ function and is not associated with pain or lameness.
