Biotechnology, Epigenetics, & Stem Cell Research
Research in the Biotechnology, Epigenetics, and Stem Cell Research area is diverse and includes:
- Studying embryonic stem (ES) cells and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells in laboratory animals (golden Syrian hamster, guinea pig, and naked mole-rat, etc.) and farm animals (cattle, goat, sheep, and pig, etc.)
- Animal cloning by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) in the above-mentioned species, and studying the epigenetics of genomic reprogramming and its impacts on embryogenesis and fetal development
- Developing genetically engineered non-murine animal models of human diseases
- Using mice as animal models to study how nutritional and environmental exposures during prenatal development change the germline epigenome.
- Mechanisms of sperm epigenetic programming and its impact on offspring health; heritable diseases of epigenetic origin (transgenic mouse models)
- Establishing heterochronic gonadal somatic cell isolation and in vivo transplantation procedures in rodents
- Investigations on environmental impacts on the epigenome in the context of cancer development
